NGO “Man and the Law” has received consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations! This is news of global scale and significance for our small republic! We are overflowing with joy and pride for the trust put in us!
At the moment, about 3,200 non-governmental organizations from all over the world have this high status with the Council. In the entire history of the work of the UN Economic and Social Council, which was established in 1945, the Republic of Mari El sounds here for the first time! “Special consultative status” is a huge responsibility and broad powers. It is provided to those few non-governmental organizations that, according to the UN Economic and Social Council, are sufficiently professional and can help it in its work.
The Council acts as a coordinating link through which the rest of the world carries out a partnership with the United Nations. It is a unique global platform for dialogue between politicians, parliamentarians, scientists, foundations, and organizations from around the world.
It took us about 5 years to prove this right. During all this time, we have provided a huge number of documents, answered many clarifying requests and questions from both the UN and the Russian Federation to confirm our qualifications and independence from sources of foreign funding.
Without exaggeration, we owe this status to the long-term work of Sergei Poduzov, who for several years worked as a consultant to the UN, representing our organization there.
Let’s tell you more about what the UN Economic and Social Council is, and what gives us the status of consultants to this body. The United Nations is the main international structure and it is more effective to interact with it through the UN Economic and Social Council. To put it in simple words, from this moment on, NGO “Man and Law” becomes the very vehicle through which the voice of human rights organizations from all over our country can be heard in the international arena.
