Interregional Committee Against Torture began its work on the territory of Chechen Republic in November, 2009. Since that time human rights defenders continue their work on murder and torture cases in Chechen Republic.
At the current moment facts of tortures take place in spite of the fact that tortures are prohibited by the Constitution and federal law of the Russian Federation. In such cases guilty responsible people are not punished. In order to change this situation Interregional Committee Against Torture coordinates the work of its regional departments, including Mari El Republic.
The representation of the Interregional Committee Against Torture under Regional public organization “Human being and Law” was found in December, 2006. A great number of people has applied to the organization in order to protect their violated rights. A professional team of lawyers render qualified legal aid. If the rights can’t be rehabilitated on the national level, lawyers apply to the European Court of Human Rights. Nowadays 10 complaints are under consideration in the European Court of Human Rights.
